Green tea has been looked to for its health properties for hundreds of years. I add green tea extract to my juice every week and here I share why.
Last week we talked about Maca and its benefits for juicers. This week we leave South America for Asia.
Green Tea has been brewed in China and Japan for thousands of years for its taste and health properties. Today many health conscious folk opt for green tea over black tea.
Andrew Weil MD says that ‘green tea is a potent source of antioxidants known as catechins.’
WebMD says ‘green tea is used for mental alertness and thinking.’
Harvard Medical School describe catechins as’ more powerful than vitamins C and E in halting oxidative damage to cells and appear to have other disease-fighting properties. Studies have found an association between consuming green tea and a reduced risk for several cancers, including, skin, breast, lung, colon, esophageal, and bladder.’ They go on to report that ‘Additional benefits for regular consumers of green and black teas include a reduced risk for heart disease. The antioxidants in green, black, and oolong teas can help block the oxidation of LDL (bad) cholesterol, increase HDL (good) cholesterol and improve artery function. A Chinese study published recently in the Archives of Internal Medicine showed a 46%-65% reduction in hypertension risk in regular consumers of oolong or green tea, compared to non-consumers of tea.’
Some studies say that green tea helps in the fight against some cancers.
Others swear by the weight loss benefits of drinking green tea. Lifehack write that ‘Green tea increases the metabolism. The polyphenol found in green tea works to intensify levels of fat oxidation and the rate at which your body turns food into calories’
I add green tea extract to my morning juice along with the Maca and greens powder. I feel that it does give me more mental alertness and if there are weight loss properties then I am getting a double boost.
I use a non caffeine based green tea extracts made by a company called Pure Inventions. They have very flavours and I enjoy the peach green tea. The company claim that one serving is the equivalent of 8 cups of green tea.
Of course if you are tea drinker then you may not need the extract but it could be worth substituting some of the black teas with green tea.
