Yesterday, we looked at utilizing what you say when you talk to yourself to give you that mental edge to succeed rather than beat yourself up.
I want to share with you a really good strategy which should help to bolster your confidence when those nerves come calling on race day.
I hope that during your training you kept a record of mileage and pace. I recommend a NikePlus Sports Watch, this is the second half I have trained for using one. I prefer it over Garmin because this GPS watch is not as technical and is straightforward to use.
I can’t say I am really into stats but they can really help you to fight off nerves a few days before a race and on race day. I started this training campaign in July and now is a good time to review the numbers, I will reveal how you can use this to strengthen your mental juice after the stats.
So here I can see that in July I ran just under 82 miles at an average pace of 9.25.
And here I can see that in August I ran almost 80 miles with an increased pace at almost 9 min miles. It would have been more mileage if it was not for the week in Romania. (although I think that week off helped my body.)
And in September I notched up 43 miles at a slightly fast pace than August, slightly!
So to beat the pre race nerves I remind myself that I have done the prep. I have run 205 miles for this 13.1 at an average pace of 9.14 min miles. If I perform at this pace during the half marathon it will be on or around the 2hr mark. My goal is just under 2 hours and my training schedule is showing this is totally achievable. I need to keep telling myself that I have run over 200 miles for this in training so I have given myself the best insurance of succeeding.
It is like being at school when you sit down for an exam and having not studied, you know there is a big risk of failure. When you have put the work in then you are giving yourself every chance of success.
Here is a bonus technique. If you have lost weight in your training, take a look at your bigger self and remember two things.
- You are carrying less weight, that will help you run better and enjoy it more.
- The running and juicing/nutrition is working. You have to keep on with this lifestyle you are changing your life for good!
Here are two photos I have been looking at for this strategy.
When I see these two new photos I know how good proper nutrition and exercise has been for me. And that I need to keep it up in order to enjoy the benefits.
