To peel or not to peel for juicing

One of the most frequent questions we get about juicing from you (other than where do you get your protein?) is what fruit should we peel and what should we not peel.

In our experience many fruits and veggies should be juiced with their peels on.  Others, however, must be peeled because they are either too thick for the juicer or contain things which are not good for us. Some even say that orange peel when juiced contains toxins. I actually did juice unpeeled oranges when I started out transforming my life. Never mind the supposed toxins, the taste was disgusting.

Juicing and Peeling

Fruits that should always be Peeled

Kiwis
Papayas
Oranges
Grapefruits
Tangerines
Bananas
- waxed fruit
(A personal choice – you may prefer to peel non-organic fruits and veggies because of what is sprayed on them.)

RoJ Tip – even though you should peel oranges and grapefruits, try and keep as much of the white pith because it contains lots of nutrients.

You can juice watermelons with the rind on. Our friend Jay Kordich tells us that the rind contains over 95% of the minerals and nutrients. Thats right when you eat a melon then you are only consuming 5% of the goodness. (Another reason why juicing is the way forward.)

Juiced watermelons are one of my favorite hydrating drinks in the summer.

Juicing is Simple

So there are very few fruits and veggies that you should not peel, showing once again that there are very few rules when it comes to juicing.

Please keep your questions coming.
