Exercising after the holidays

Many people struggle to get back into their exercise regime after the holiday period.

I was good this Christmas, I ran in the snow through the Virgina forests. What got me was a 9 day business trip to Amsterdam.I packed my running gear but I did not run.  A combination of it being very dark in the mornings and the cyclists. They are like kamikaze pilots at times, I did not want to be running in the dark and dealing with that.

Now back in NYC, I struggled to get back into my running regime. When I did get out there I struggled to complete 3 miles whereas 2 weeks earlier I was running 20 mile weeks.

Here are three way to get back into your workout routine.

  1. Write down some goals. Why do you run/bike/walk etc? What do you want to achieve? This should get your passion for it going again.
  2. Minimise your workouts.  If you normally bike 10 miles then bike 5. What you need to do right now is to recreate the habit you built up. If you worked out 4 times a week then you should attempt this same days with a low intensity workout. You will find your fitness soon returns.
  3. Go exercise with a friend. Or if you are like me and prefer to run alone then mix up a new playlist to listen to. Maybe even buy some new music – working out gives you a great way to listen to new tunes.

These are the 3 strategies I employ to get backside out there.

One last bonus tip – think about how great you feel after a run/walk/swim and how great it would be to feel like that in an hours time.
