I am a huge fan of Jason Vale. His ’7lbs in 7 days’ was the first juicing book I ever read. His impact on my life is incredible, I am now almost 70 pounds lighter, lost 8 inches from my waist, run half marathons having been a couch potato who only ever ran to the pizza place. My career also took off after I started juicing, I was promoted several times and got a transfer from Sweden to San Francisco and now living the dream in the Big Apple. (You can read more about my juicing weight loss success here)
I thought it would be fun to try out his 3 day juicing app and provide an honest review for Running On Juice readers.
So why a detox Shane?
Good question as I completed a 3 day juice fast only a few weeks back. Well after the trauma of Hurricane Sandy which left me without power and hot water, I fled to my native England. Now here is a problem for me, as disciplined as I can be, when I go home I find it hard to stick to my regime. Luckily then I only go back once a year or so. I met up with old friends which means more alcohol than usual plus eating out. There are a lot of foods back in England which are hard to come by in the USA. None of it very healthy, I am talking Yorkshire Pudding, Pork Pies, Scotch Eggs, donner kebab and my nemesis the infamous sausage in batter. Not to forget my favourite cuisine – the Indian Curry. Of course I should be disciplined but it is difficult when you only get access to these foods once a year. Don’t get me wrong, I did not go all out and stuff my face every day – but I ate badly and my body feels it.
Also I have been spoiled in NYC – so many juice bars here and very few in London. I felt the need after 7 days of less than optimal eating and drinking that I needed a good cleanse.
As an experienced Juicer I usually throw the recipes together myself so I thought again it would be educational to follow Jason’s recipes on his app.
Hurricane Sandy meant I had to empty the fridge before I left for England. So I have no food in there which is an excellent time to start a juice detox.
The app comes with videos, recipes, shopping lists and lots of support.
The recipes are not new to me being a fan of Jason for so long but I love the section ‘how does this help detox?‘ More on this later.
The Cost of the produce.
I decided to buy all the produce at once. I always struggle going to into shops to buy more produce as all the bad foods are calling me. Better to get the whole 3 days worth in one go and not have that kind of stress.
I bought my produce in Whole Foods at Tribeca, so I know you can get this stuff cheaper.
The cost of everything on the Jason Vale detox app came in at $62.55 or just under 40 GBP. That’s actually very good for 3 days worth of food so no this is not an expensive cleanse. In New York City, Organic Avenue charge over $200 for a 3 day cleanse. They do everything for you so I am not knocking it just showing how much cheaper it is to detox when you do it yourself.
Now I did add some boosters, these are not essential for the Juicemaster 3 day detox but I like to pack even more power into my juices.
Kale – $2.49
Ground flaxseed – $5.79
Amazing Grass Super Food – $31.99
So the boosts are pricey and as I say if budget is a concern then do not include them.
Day 1 Juicemaster 3 day detox
Jason wants us to start the day with hot water and a lemon. I usually ignore this one but as I am writing a review for you the loyal reader I want to follow his regime to the letter.
Strangely it tasted good, maybe I should stick with this after the detox. Further research shows this start to the day can fight hunger pangs, balance pH and aids digestion.
Jason Vale also believes we should exercise during the detox, his favourite is the rebounder. I live in a high rise apartment so no danger of that. My favourite form of exercise is running though this morning I was hesitant. Why? Its 0C or 32F. Yes freezing. Poor NYC had a noreast’er which meant lots of snow. I am not scared of the snow, when I started this blog and my first Juice fast I was running outside in the freezing cold of Stockholm. Temperatures plummeted to -35F there. As with everything though the first runs in the cold are always the worst. Once I was out there I was fine and loved it.
Juicemaster Vale says we should strive for an hour a day of exercise usually 2 x 30 min sessions.

I boosted this with flaxseed for additional fibre and Amazing Grass Superfood.
Now here is what I like about the Juicemaster 3 day detox. I love the:
‘How does this help detox?’ section.
On this one the 3 day juicing app tells us – ‘Avocados provide nearly 20 essential nutrients, including fibre, potassium, vitamin E, B vitamins and folic acid. They also contain about 250 calories which when on this juice plan, you will be very grateful for. The good fat also helps to regulate the appetite. Celery helps to flush the body of excessive carbon dioxide and reduce acidity in the system. The beet is extremely good for cleansing the bloodstream and is excellent, along with lemon,, for cleansing the liver and kidneys. Beet is also one of nature’s finest blood builders. The high levels of beta-carotene in this juice help mop up harmful feee radicals and strengthen the immune system.’
This is awesome, start feeling hungry then keep re-reading this and your determination will be supercharged.
I really enjoyed the taste, the avocado makes it nice and creamy. I can feel these nutrients instantly repairing the damage done by English beer and vindaloo!
Early night last night as I was exhausted. Think it was a combination of jet-lag (I am just back in NYC from the UK) and the detox.
Woke up bright and early and was on the hot water and lemon, I am starting to enjoy it.
Now I can tell my diet has been a bit off because I suffered with really bad headaches yesterday. This has not happened to me during the last juicing cleanses because I had kicked the coffee habit. Unfortunately I slipped on that one and the detox is making me pay for that!
After the hot water and lemon, it was straight out for a run. A cool five miler along Battery Park City in NYC. It is still shocking to see the aftermath and clean up of Hurricane Sandy which decimated my running route. I ran the 5 miles at an average of 8mins 36 seconds per mile. Not bad at all.
This mornings’ breakfast as a smoothie made entirely from fruit. I usually make a juice with 80% veg to 20% fruit or at least a ratio of 3 to 1. So this was a little different for me, if I am honest it was a little too sweet but for new juicers this would be very welcome as it almost feels like a dessert, without all the crap and calories of course.
Juice Master’s Super Detox Smoothie
3/4 cup blueberries
3/4 cup blackberries
3/4 cup Bio Live Yoghurt – I used Chobani Greek Yoghurt – excellent source of protein.
I added ground flaxseed for additional fibre.
Probably one of the easiest juices to make!
Juice the pineapple and pour into the blender along with the blueberries, blackberries, yoghurt and ice. Blend until smooth.
‘Whats’ In it?
Vitamins B1, B2, B6, C and D, fibre, potassium, iron, calcium, manganese, beta-carotene, phosporus, folic acid, antioxidants, zinc and sodium.
How Does This Help the Detox
Blueberries contain some of nature’s most powerful antioxidants and anti-aging phyonutrients, which help to destroy the free radicals that age the skin and cause premature wrinkles. Blackberries are antibacterial, they promote healing and are also god for the treatment and prevention of diarrhoea. Live yoghurt helps to maintain a healthy gut. I used Chobani as its packed with protein which I like to add after a run.’
I was not nice to be around on Day 2, I snapped at people and was in a stinking mood. I was really worried about this as I hate being in such a foul mood but I should have checked out Jason’s Day 2 video in the morning. He references the fact that he often gets stroppy as well on Day 2.
Juicemaster 3 day Detox App Videos.
Jason Vale is for many an acquired taste. His energy and enthusiasm will either have you rolling your eyes or itching to get the juicer going. Personally I have always found his enthusiasm refreshing. OK this is his business and he is making a few quid but he genuinely believes that juicing will benefit us all and he really wants to ‘juice the world’. Watching his video I get the feeling he really wants me to succeed rather than upsell me another product!
During a detox/cleanse his videos are invaluable. Watch one in the morning and then watch again if the ‘hunger gremlins’ attack. What I love about Jason is that he talks more about mental juice than anything else. He emphasizes that this should not be viewed as a diet, well certainly not a restrictive one otherwise you will fail. It can be lonely going through a juicing cleanse, especially if you are doing it alone. So use these videos and listen to them as you would listen to a friend.
The videos do take a while to load but they are 10 mins plus and worth waiting for.
I have been juicing for almost 3 years now and I learned something from his videos. I have juiced broccoli but always the florets. I never knew you could (and should!) juice the stem. Not the stem to the floret but the stem at the bottom, apparently this is action packed with nutrients, worth the $5.99 app price alone. Frustrating to think of all that goodness I have been throwing in the trash!
I was up early and felt a crescendo of energy. Jason Vale talks about this in his videos and he is right, I was bouncing so it was out on a run for me as soon as I was up.
I ran for 6 miles and very fast (for me.) Take a look at the times below.
Jason does ask us to exercise (if we are fit and able.) Many people think you can’t run on a juice fast, you can and if you are able to, you should! I feel really light and lots more energy than if I have eaten ‘normal’ food.
Many people claim that juicing fixes insomnia. In my case I got to bed early and woke earlier feeling full of energy. So a Monday morning and I am up around 6am. Full of beans I drink my hot water with lemon and hit the road. I ran a steady 4 miles so that is a total of 18 miles runs in 4 days, all whilst juicing.
Now here is the thing…wait for it..I am carrying on with the cleanse. That’s right I am going to continue. I am not setting myself a deadline, the main job has been done, after a week on the lash and the bad food at home I truly believe I have cleaned my system but I want to go that little bit further.
I know many of you are dying to know how much weight I have lost. Well I started out around 186 and this morning weighed in around 182. So a 4 pound loss which I am more than happy with. For the last 3 years I have been trying to get from 250 pounds to 179.9, only a matter of time now.
